Home remodel
No Bad Days is no ordinary name for a home, the name chosen as it embraces the Clients' positive spirits of living. Their retirement MCM home is in complete contrast to their former Richmond, Va Jeffersonian Home of 25 years. Nestled on the Rappahannock River , this quiet “ Yachting Community of Carters Creek” is an estuary to the Chesapeake Bay and Ocean beyond. It is an ecosystem of crabs, oysters, rockfish, dolphins, stingrays, loons, cardinals, humans, and more.

The Designer- Client relationship began as a complete collaboration of ideas continually exchanged throughout .
Roles and Expectations: “ There was always a dynamic discourse of why something worked when it was juxtaposed to another. It became a game of observations and perceptions… a review of the positive and negative aspects of all things incorporated into the design including the human factor.”
a fish out of water
The inspiration for the design stems from the Client’s favorite colors of blue & brown which mimics the 180degree views of the Water and neighboring cultivated oyster beds. The natural stone slab (focal wall) is intentionally chosen for its movement and how it personifies the ebb and flow of The River and oysters. The Heritage Blue pigment highlights the Range and Hood as the perfect shades to complement its dark chocolate and grey marble backdrop.
final design
The selection of mixed metals and mixed finishes is intentional as a harmonious balance of opposites. A small touch of the whimsical is showcased in the Oyster shell semi-flush light. A homage to mid- century furniture is reflected in the stools, a contemporary adaptation . The dauphin antique console... originally to be de-boned and re-imagined as the floating bar end cap was kept "as is" and is showcased in the entry along with walnut, wenge, brass, marble and more….
Capturing the views from every angle..wouldn't you want to sail away?
BEFORE: Although we would have liked to re-purpose this original 1950s steel kitchen... the interior components could not be salvaged.
Existing Conditions: Extended soffits had been recently added to protect the home from the inclement weather; therefore; it would have been cost prohibitive to straighten the porch walls when we enclosed it. The facade views from the water would have changed. SOLUTION: We ignored the awkward trapezoid shape rather than design within its limitations.
